Dynamics Challenge #3 — Projectile Motion

A projectile
off a table.

Dynamics Medium

Problem

A ball rolls off the edge of a table 1.225 m high with a horizontal speed of 4.0 m/s. Calculate the horizontal distance from the table edge to where it lands.

  • Table height\( h = 1.225\ \mathrm{m} \)
  • Horizontal speed\( v = 4.0\ \mathrm{m/s} \)
  • Gravity\( g = 9.8\ \mathrm{m/s^2} \)
  • Answer inmetres
Ignore air resistance; the launch is perfectly horizontal.
Hint: the two directions are independent. Vertically it’s pure free fall — find the flight time from \( h = \tfrac{1}{2}gt^2 \) — then the horizontal speed carries it for exactly that long.
